This live, interactive IEW class will engage your student, who is in grades nine through eleven, each week. Students receive clear, consistent writing instruction with live classes and grading provided in a timely fashion. Each class can be used for a full writing credit. Units one through nine will be covered. Attending a live class is essential for success, however, sessions will be recorded and available for one week. Classes are taught using methodology by The Institute for Excellence in Writing® by a teacher certified to teach with this method. (https://iew.com/support/instructors/joann-johnson-66872)
IEW’s Structure and Style® writing method will give your student’s a toolbox so that they have confidence-building tools, which lays the groundwork for a lifetime of excellent writing. My focus is to assist your student to gain skills to confidently communicate by learning to write well, think clearly, and express themselves eloquently and persuasively.
Note: This class has a six student minimum.
Recommended
This class is a level B+ and is recommended for students in 9th – 11th grade.
Parents are required to actively participate in the homework process. During class, structure will be introduced, explained, and modeled. Tools will be provided to add style. Students will also gain knowledge of organizing as they assemble their binder on a weekly basis. Assignments will need to be typed using Word or Google docs by the student or with parental assistance.
Students who have completed Year 2 Level B (SSS-2B) or two years of a “B” level theme-based book are ready for an exciting journey using new and engaging sources. This course may also be taken with special permission from the teacher. We will review and refine the nine previously learned IEW units, then press into writing responses to literature. Additionally there are six weeks focusing on reading, analyzing, and writing poetry.
Technical Requirements
A computer with high-speed internet with a headset, working camera, and microphone.
Assignments are turned in via Canvas.

Parent Responsibilities
Parents are the primary educators. My goal is to come alongside you to teach writing concepts, grammar presented in the book, and explain stylistic techniques while you provide the quiet
learning environment, keep your students on task during class time, review lessons, edit, and
ensure that coursework is properly completed and submitted.
WHAT IS THE INSTITUTE FOR EXCELLENCE IN WRITING (IEW)?

IEW is the award-winning Structure and Style Method for teaching writing. IEW helps children
succeed in communicating confidently and effectively. Rather than facing a writing prompt with
the dreaded “blank page,” students are taught nine structural writing models with style in each
assignment. Students will develop confidence in writing while working towards independence
and creativity. The IEW methods can be applied to other assignments, too. When students write
consistently, they become confident and competent.
As an experienced IEW Certified Instructor and an Online Instructor, you can trust that I will
teach the Structure and Style method with integrity.
